Profile

Marios Vryonides is assistant professor of Sociology at the European University Cyprus. He got his BA in Sociology from Panteion University Athens, his MA in Sociology from the University of Essex and his PhD from Institute of Education – University of London. From 2004 until 2009 he was visiting lecturer at the Institute of Education - University of London. He has taught at Anglia Polytechnic University (2001-2003) and the University of the Aegean (2004-2007). From 2008 he is Cyprus’ national coordinator of the European Social Survey. He is running two European Commission funded research projects (2011-2012) titled “Children’s voices: Exploring interethnic violence in schools” and “Fundamental Rights Education in Europe – FREE”. Together with Christos Kassimeris he has co-edited a book published by Routledge titled “The Politics of Education: Challenging Multiculturalism” (2011). He is currently the Secretary of the Research Committee on Sociology of Education (RC04) of the International Sociological Association. He has published widely on sociological and educational issues in international peer reviewed journals. His research interests focus on contemporary sociological theory, sociology of education, in the theories of cultural and social capital and in the processes of educational choice-making.
