Title: Instrumentation and Arranging

Code: MUS213

Instrumentation and arranging skills are important to all musicians regardless of background or area of specialization. The course aims to provide students with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of the most fundamental aspects and principles of instrumentation and arranging and equip them with the necessary tools for their further development, creating solid foundations for further developing these skills as part of MUS 366 (Creative Orchestration). Students will become fluent with features of instrumentation and relevant idiomatic techniques in writing for string (including harp), woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. They will attain the necessary skills for arranging short piano pieces for small instrumental combinations. The course delivery and structure will be a combination of multiple audiovisual examples of the techniques discussed as well as practical demonstrations of instruments, where possible, given either by students themselves or selected professionals. The works discussed and analyzed in class (both score and recording) will be on reserve at the library for the whole term.
