Title: Teaching Music in an Intercultural Context

Code: MUS355

The aim of the course is to introduce students to world music education as well as to broader issues regarding intercultural and multicultural education, diversity and equity in the schools. Apart from the selection and use of culturally diverse repertoire in the music classroom, students will ponder upon the teaching of music in culturally diverse classrooms. They will further examine the role of music in society and the prevailing attitudes toward minorities and “the other.” Through an examination of case studies they will reconsider prevailing attitudes regarding social stereotyping, racial prejudice and discrimination.
