Title: Byzantine Music

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the stylistic and cultural history of Byzantine music as well as to the music itself. Byzantine music, an essentially monophonic music, has come to be associated with Greek Orthodox Church music and with the Orthodox faith. The various stages of the development of the earliest Christian hymnography will be discussed, along with a close examination of the notation of the music and the text, through listening, analyzing and chanting.
