Erasmus+ The Keep me Safe project

Posted: July 24, 2019

Background

Funded by the European Union, the Keep me Safe project began in October 2014 and lasts until September 2016. The project is led by Professor Tim Waller (Anglia Ruskin University, UK) and Dr Darren Sharpe (University of East London, UK). The partners are: Shain Akhtar and Ann Russell (Walsall Council, UK), Dr Spyros Spyrou and Nicos Sozos (European University Cyprus) and Efosini Kalyva (SEERC, Greece). The project also involves young people from UK, Greece and Cyprus.

Aims and objectives

The overall aim of the Keep me Safe project is to develop a game-infused e-learning tool designed by young people for young people. The tool will promote early access to services for young people to help with neglect and abuse. It will also promote best practice among European professionals to ensure they recognise the issues from the perspectives of young people as they move across Europe.

Methods

The principal underpinning the game is ‘learning by doing’. The game is being co-designed and co-produced with groups of young co-inquirers based in the UK, Cyprus and Greece. They are being trained and supported to run events with groups of vulnerable young people in the development of storylines and scenarios to populate the game which will be based upon real situations and perceptions of accessing early routes for help with neglect and abuse by young people on the move across Europe.

Project Activities and Actions

Keep me Safe will involve researchers, youth protection specialists and young people from the UK, Greece and Cyprus collaborating with a games design company to develop a game-infused e-learning tool. The tool will be made openly available to help other youth protection specialists across the EU and beyond to ensure that the learning from this project is widely disseminated.
