European University Cyprus included in Magna Charta Universitatum
European University Cyprus is now one of the 816 distinguished and historic universities that form the internationally recognized organization Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum.
Reaffirming its commitment to the core values of university education and academic principles worldwide, European University Cyprus – following a review and evaluation – is now among the 816 prestigious and historic universities of the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum, which includes Université Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne, University of Toronto, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Chicago, Universität Zürich, Universität Hamburg, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München, Aarhus University, University of Copenhagen, Universität Wien, Universiteit van Amsterdam, etc.
The Magna Charta Universitatum – jointly created by the European University Association (EUA) and the University of Bologna – outlines the principles of academic freedom, institutional autonomy and independence, as a guideline for good governance and the effective operation of universities.
Furthermore, the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum constitutes the institutional guardian of university operating principles, focusing on teaching and research, humanitarian tradition, intercultural dialogue and association with society so that universities become a place and place of excellence.
The official ceremony took place at the University of Pecs in Hungary, the first university in Hungary, established 650 years ago, in 1367.
Rector Kostas Gouliamos who attended the event and signed the accession protocol of the European University Cyprus to the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum stated: “I was heartened to meet with so many thoughtful Rectors of prestigious and high-ranking universities who welcomed our University, acknowledging the work we carry out. With universities more important to society than ever and at a time when they are required to be the bastions of independent thought, education and research, the decision – following an evalution – to include the European University Cyprus to the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum constitutes a great honour. At the same time, our inclusion also demonstrates and proves the trust held by the international university community as regards the excellence and credibility of our organization”.
European University Cyprus is the only private university signatory from Cyprus.
