Workshop on Galaxy Evolution at European University Cyprus
The Astrophysics and High Performance Computing (AHPC) Research group and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of European University Cyprus organized very successfully on the 29th of March 2016 a workshop on "Galaxy Evolution".
The aim of the workshop was to provide a forum for young and experienced researchers in the field, but also researchers in related fields, for discussion of recent observational, theoretical and computational results in Galaxy Evolution.
The organization of the workshop was considered very timely as recent observational advances mainly in the infrared and submillimetre part of the spectrum, which involved observations carried out with missions like the Herschel Space Observatory and the ground-based ALMA array, have allowed the international astronomical community to explore in more detail the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time and determine the role of supermassive black holes in this process. At the same time significant progress has been made in the development of increasingly sophisticated models that aid the interpretation of observations.
The program included a keynote talk by Prof Carol Lonsdale of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, United States on ‘Highly Obscured Mid-IR-Luminous QSOs with Young Radio Jets’ and a presentation by Prof Andreas Efstathiou, Vice Rector for Research and External Affairs of European University Cyprus and head of the Astrophysics and High Performance Computing research group.
