Short Curriculum vitae:
Georgios Petrikkos, MD and PhD, is emeritus professor of internal medicine and infectious diseases of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in Greece and professor of Immunology , Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the Medical School of the European University of Cyprus.
He graduated the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1973
He received clinical training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at “LAIKON” Hospital in Athens, Greece and additional training in clinical microbiology, mycology, and molecular biology at several hospitals, including St Thomas’ Hospital and Guy’s Hospital in London, England, and Institute Jules Bordet in Brussels, Belgium.
He was the Head of the 4th Internal Medicine Department and the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory at ATTIKON University Hospital as well as Medical Director of this hospital from 2009-2014
His clinical and research interests include: in vitro testing of the susceptibilities of nosocomial and community- acquired bacteria to new antimicrobial agents; in vivo controlled clinical studies of antibiotics; neutropenic host studies, epidemiology of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance surveillance studies. Among his special research interests are the study of fungal infections and antifungals.
He is president of the Mediterranean Society of Chemotherapy and Infection (MSCI), and the Cyprus Society of Chemotherapy and Infectious Diseases, past- president of the Hellenic Society of Medical Mycology, past president of the Hellenic Society of Lymphology, past secretary general of the Hellenic Society of Chemotherapy and past member of the executive committee of the Hellenic Society of Infectious Diseses. He was secretary general of the European Confederation of M edical Mycology (ECMM) and is acting member of the executive committee of the Internatioanl Society of Chemotherapy (ISC), the European Society of Chemotherapy (ESC) and the Federation of European Societies of Chemotherapy and Infections (FESCI). He is also the coordinator of the ECMM/ISHAM Working Group on Zygomycosis, member of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer- Infectious Diseases Group (EORTC-IDG) and member of the EFISG study Group of ESCMID and coordinator of ISC Fungal Infections WG.
He is the chairman and member of several advisory boards and committees
He received several honors and awards.
Dr Petrikkos is the author of over 250 publications in Greek and internatioanl scientific journals and books with more than 4000 citations and he is member of the Editorial Board and reviewer of more than 20 scientific journals.
