Loizos Symeou is Associate Professor in Sociology of Education at European University Cyprus where he teaches Sociology of Education and Qualitative Research Methods in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate courses. He is the first Chairperson of the Department of Education Sciences of the European University Cyprus (September 2007-August 2012). Since September 2014 he has been elected as Dean of the School of Arts and Education Sciences of the European University Cyprus. He holds degrees from the University of Cyprus (B.Ed.), the University of Sydney (M.Ed. in Teaching Studies), and the University of Cambridge (M.Phil. in Educational Research, and PhD in Sociology of Education). His areas of interest and publications focus on sociological aspects of education, family-school relationships, qualitative research methodology in education, and ethics in educational and social research. He has worked in a number of research projects involving schools, teachers, parents and children. Recent work includes a study on homework, a study on the educational experience of Roma children and families, and a project on the empowerment of Roma women. His research record includes a monograph, journal articles, book chapters in edited volumes, and presentations in international conferences.
