ECTS is a learner-centered system for credit accumulation and transfer based on learning outcomes. It aims to facilitate the planning, delivery, evaluation, recognition, and validation of qualifications and units of learning as well as student mobility.
What is ECTS?
ECTS are based on the workload students need to achieve expected learning outcomes. Learning Outcomes describe what a learner is supposed to know, understand and be able to do after successful completion of a process of learning. Workload indicates the time students typically need to complete all learning activities (such as lectures, projects, practical work, study time, examinations, etc.) required to achieve the expected learning outcomes. 60 ECTS credits are attached to the workload of a full-time academic year of formal learning. Student workload ranges from 1,500 to 1,800 hours for an academic year, whereby one credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of work.
Credits are allocated to all educational components of a program of study (courses, internships, work placements, projects, laboratory work, clinical practice, etc) and reflect the student workload each component requires to achieve its specific objectives or learning outcomes in relation to the quantity of work necessary to complete a full year of study successfully.
ECTS within European University Cyprus
EUC was amongst the first universities in Cyprus to implement ECTS. Internationalization is a key feature of EUC; the implementation of ECTS on various levels (course catalog, procedures for exchange students, availability of many programs in English, availability of all relevant information in English) is a priority for all departments within EUC.
